I love this web-site that presents "works by artists who are forgotten, underappreciated, or little known,.." The artists presented span the full range of pictorial expression.
The Bay Area Classical Art Atelier (BACAA) in San Carlos, California, offers classes and workshops in figure drawing and painting. It is a rigorous art environment with systematic instruction, clearly defined goals, and the mental focus is very keen. What I have learned at BACAA has been invaluable to the development in art work, regardless of the subject matter.
CAC was founded in 1909 by artists in the Pasadena/Los Angles area.
Micheal and Nick Johnson are knowledgeable in California art and specialize in California-Style watercolors. They show original art and high quality glicees, or ink-jet reproductions as well. California Watercolor offers my watercolor paintings and prints for sale.
LivermorePatch.com is the daily, on-line 'newspaper' that provides content on the town's news, events, and businesses in town. It also provides a forum for members of the community to express their opinions and musings. I post artwork that I have done in Livermore, then discuss my painting experience as well as ideas related to the piece.
NWS was founded in 1920 by painters in the Los Angeles area as the California Watercolor Society.
I taught the art class at the Pacific Boychoir Academy in Oakland, California, an all-boy middle school from 2004-08, while my son was a student. In addition to giving my son wonderful childhood experiences as a boy soprano, it was an inspiring for me to see and hear how music is taught, accountability and citizenship modeled, and a professional arts organization managed.
Paul Bockhorst creates documentaries about art and architecture. His "California Visions" from the early 1990's help set in motion a renewed appreciation of California Regionalist Painting. It includes interviews by art dealer David Stary-Sheets who represented by work from 1983 to 2000, his father Millard Sheets who was influential in the development of my art, and curators from the Oakland, Laguna Beach, and Irvine Museums.
Paul's new documentary on Bernard Maybeck "An American Masterpiece" shows the development of Maybeck's unique contribution to California Beaux Artes and Arts And Crafts Style architecture that defines San Francisco and the East Bay. Maybeck was another major influence in my life because my college education was at Principia College, designed by Maybeck. And for about 90 seconds, the Pacific Boychoir's singing Bach is on the sound track!
I've always been an outdoor painter, but the odd tan lines from sitting on one position for hours and considering the effects it could have over the decades, I decided to wear long sleeve shirts. Sunblock lotion could be problematic because it would transfer from my fingertips on to the paper and contaminate it. I began wearing white gloves with the finger tips cut off: this allowed for full control of the brush but resulted in a tan line at the knuckles! I wore a broad rimmed hat with a shirt buttoned up to the collar but I still ended up with a 'red-neck'. Sometime in the late 1990's I discovered Sun Precautions' Solumbra hoodie and have been a devotee ever since. It may look like I'm wearing a bee-keeper's outfit: but with only the triangle of my face and fingertips exposed I haven't had a tanline nor sun-burn from working outdoors since.
Greg Conley's cornicopia of information! Greg wrote a review of the Millard Sheets Palette I was selling in 2010, and also featured my work Spring 2010 "On the Net"
