Californian Carolyn Lord was introduced to the "California Regionalist Watercolor" tradition by James Green while attending Principia College in Illinois, 1974-8. During and after college she attended painting workshops with Millard Sheets, Rex Brandt, George Post, Milford Zornes, and Robert E. Wood. Taking advantage of watercolor's extreme portability, Carolyn has traveled abroad to Brasil, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, England, US and British Virgin Islands, Mexico, and French Polynesia. International travel is nice, yet there is plenty to paint in California with its landscape, architecture, and gardens as expressed through her idiosyncratic choice of subject, design, and color.
Watercolor defines Carolyn Lord's career as an exhibiting artist, but is not the full extent of her interests: she studied at the San Francisco Tapestry Workshop and Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier; designed posters for the Livermore Valley Opera; enjoys portraiture and figure drawing and oil painting; designed and painted glazed ceramic tile for a fireplace and kitchen installations; taught art to middle school boys at the Pacific Boychoir Academy in Oakland; painted stage sets for Livermore's West End Theater; and blogs about her paintings for Livermore Patch.com; teaches adult classes in perspective and figure drawing.
Carolyn enjoys architectural history, opera and boy choirs, quilts and embroiders on occasion, relishes painting the fruit trees and flowers that grow in her garden.
